‘Michael’ box office revenue approaches global top 100 list

Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic Michael has reached $854 million in worldwide revenue, positioning the film just two million dollars away from entering the top 100 highest-grossing movies of all time, per collider.com.

The Lionsgate biographical drama earned $11.8 million domestically to finish fourth in the United States rankings during its sixth weekend of release. Despite a 42 per cent drop from the previous week, the film maintained steady theatrical momentum against new box office competition, including the horror feature Backrooms.

To secure a position in the all-time global top 100, Michael requires a further $2 million to surpass the 2018 science-fiction film Venom, which currently holds the 100th spot.

Following the commercial performance of the film, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson confirmed that a sequel is officially in development. Fogelson stated that progress on the second film is advancing and that discussions with relevant parties continue to progress exceptionally well.

The initial film, which was released on April 24, focuses on the early career of Michael Jackson. The upcoming sequel is expected to address the later, more contentious periods of the musician’s life, following public criticism regarding the omission of these controversies in the first instalment.
