Michael Jackson’s single “Billie Jean” has reached number one on the Spotify Global Chart for the first time, 43 years after its original release.
Data from industry tracker Chart Data shows the track reached the top spot after securing 6.02 million streams in a single 24-hour period.
Industry analysts attribute the surge in popularity to the widespread interest surrounding Michael, the recently released biographical film about the late singer.
The song was originally a cornerstone track on the global hit album Thriller.
The late musician previously noted that the track was inspired by the realities of fame, including obsessive fans and false paternity claims. He explained that the character of Billie Jean was a composite of women he and his brothers encountered during their careers, alongside personal experiences with stalkers.
