Michael Jackson’s Thriller mounts strong challenge for UK Number 1

Michael Jackson’s iconic 1982 pop anthem “Thriller” has surged to Number 2 on the Official Chart: First Look, placing intense pressure on current leader Jamie Miller’s “Babydoll” as post-Halloween listening peaks, per music-news.com.

According to early sales and streaming reports, the late singer’s horror-themed classic is within striking distance of securing the top position on Friday’s final Official Singles Chart Top 100. “Thriller” previously reached a new peak of Number 9 in 2025, 42 years after its original release, but this latest surge marks its strongest challenge yet for the top spot.

The track leads a broad seasonal takeover of the midweek UK charts. Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” has climbed into the top 10 at Number 10, while Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash” is tracking toward Number 16. Rockwell’s Somebody’s Watching Me currently sits at Number 19, closely followed by Danny Elfman’s “This Is Halloween” at Number 20 and Andrew Gold’s viral favourite “Spooky Scary Skeletons” at Number 23.

Ariana Grande is also expected to re-enter the Top 40, with her former Top 10 hit “Petal” aiming for Number 31 following a surge in user-generated Halloween content across social media.

In the wider top five, Tate McRae holds Number 3 with” Housewife,” while Ashe’s “Stop The Wedding” and Sienna Spiro’s “Great Expectation” occupy the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

“Thriller” has established itself as an annual digital streaming staple in the UK during autumn. Despite its status as one of the best-selling tracks of all time, seasonal streaming mechanics have increasingly allowed decades-old catalog records to challenge contemporary releases on the weekly chart.
