Officials around the world urged citizens this week to refrain from spreading coronavirus hoaxes on April 1, warning that the pandemic is no laughing matter and that misinformation about it could put lives at risk. “It’s against the law to fake having COVID-19 this April Fools’ Day,” the Thai government warned on Twitter.
In Taiwan and India, officials similarly threatened legal action against anyone found to spread misleading information about the virus. But not everyone heeded such calls.
