Marlon James has secured a place on the 2026 National Book Award for fiction longlist with his novel The Disappearers, announced on September 17, per bookriot.com.
The 10-title fiction longlist features works by two debut authors and six writers previously recognised by the National Book Foundation.
Alongside James feature Hannah Lillith Assadi, Kimberly Blaeser, Edwidge Danticat, Julián Delgado Lopera, Louise Erdrich, Valeria Luiselli, Alexander Maksik, Kenan Orhan, and Morgan Thomas.
Judging the fiction category are Matt Bell, Caro De Robertis, Danielle King, Akhil Sharma and Diane Wilson. Finalists receive $1,000 ahead of the November ceremony, where category winners take home $10,000 and a bronze sculpture.
Established in 1936 and overseen by the National Book Foundation, the awards honour United States-published literature by US authors across five categories, releasing 10-title longlists each September ahead of October shortlists.
