Tyla has once again cemented her place on the global stage, securing her second consecutive win at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), according to reports. The “Water” hitmaker took home the Best Afrobeats award for her track “Push 2 Start,” solidifying her status as a leading force in the genre.
In an interview at the ceremony, Tyla expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m very excited, the competition was very tough. Shout-out to all the nominees, shout-out to Africa and my team. It’s just a blessing to be here winning another award.” She also teased her upcoming album, promising fans that “it’s coming and it’s coming in hot.”
Tyla’s victory adds to her growing list of accolades and highlights the global rise of Afrobeats. The category was stacked with formidable talent, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, Asake, Rema and Skillibeng. Her win follows her historic 2024 VMA triumph for “Water,” which made her the first South African artiste to ever win the award.
Beyond her musical achievement, Tyla also turned heads on the red carpet, dazzling in a vintage beige Chanel mini-dress from the 1993 Spring Collection. The look, accessorised with gold Pandora medallions, was reminiscent of a design once worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
While Tyla celebrated her win, Lady Gaga was the night’s biggest winner, taking home four awards, including the coveted Artist of the Year award. Other top winners included Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, who each secured three trophies.
The ceremony, held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, also featured show-stopping performances from the likes of Tate McRae, Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin. Carey, Busta Rhymes, and Martin were also honoured with special awards for their contributions to music.
