The mystery sequel Enola Holmes 3 has become the number-one film globally on Netflix within days of its release, reaching the top spot in 72 countries including the United States, per cbr.com.
Despite its commercial success, the third installment of the fan-favourite franchise has registered the lowest critical and audience scores in the series’ history on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Premiered on July 1, the film features Millie Bobby Brown returning as the titular heroine alongside Henry Cavill as her brother, Sherlock Holmes. The plot follows Enola to Malta for her wedding celebrations following a proposal from Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge. The occasion shifts into a rescue mission after she discovers that Sherlock has been kidnapped.
While the film achieved top status in 57 territories within 24 hours, its global footprint expanded to 72 countries by the following day. This rapid viewership growth mirrors the performance of the first two installments released in 2020 and 2022.
However, critical reception has fallen significantly compared to its predecessors. Enola Holmes 3 debuted to a 64% approval rating from critics, which later rose to 71% based on 48 reviews. This remains below the 75% threshold required for a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The previous films secured critical scores of 91% and 93% respectively.
Audience feedback has also dropped to a franchise low of 63% from more than 250 ratings. Viewer critiques highlighted issues with pacing, a standard narrative structure, and a perceived shift in focus away from the lead character.
The project features a screenplay by franchise writer Jack Thorne, based on the novels by Nancy Springer, with Philip Barantini taking over directorial duties. The returning ensemble cast includes Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Moriarty, alongside franchise newcomer Himesh Patel as Dr. John Watson.
