‘Awo’ to grace London’s The Shaw Theatre in May

London’s iconic Shaw Theatre in Euston is set to host a spectacular theatrical event this May as Awo, the highly acclaimed musical, graces its stage. Crafted by the esteemed theatre virtuoso Makinde Adeniran fta, according to a statement, Awo promises audiences a captivating two-show extravaganza, showcasing top-tier Nigerian talent and delivering an authentic African theatrical experience.

Produced by Dr. Lookman Sanusi’s Heavy Wind Media UK Ltd, in collaboration with the Duke of Shomolu Foundation franchise, Awo is expected to attract a diverse audience eager to immerse themselves in the life and legacy of the legendary African statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The play offers a vivid portrayal of Awolowo’s remarkable journey, from his political endeavours and triumphs to navigating the tumultuous period of post-Independence Nigeria and civil war, ultimately leading to the dawn of the Second Republic in the early 1970s.

One of the unique aspects of Awo is its poignant portrayal of Chief Awolowo’s wife, Chief Mrs. HID Awolowo, who stood as a steadfast pillar behind her husband throughout his illustrious life. This portrayal adds depth and emotional resonance to the narrative, highlighting the importance of her support and resilience.

Following its resounding success in Lagos, where it garnered praise from distinguished guests including then Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo and former Governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, Awo is poised to captivate London audiences with its rich storytelling and stellar performances.

Before its London debut, Awo will make a special stopover in Ikenne, Chief Awolowo’s birthplace, for a show generously sponsored by ValueJet, offering free admission to the public. Esteemed dignitaries expected to attend include Ambassador Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu, Executive Director of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, and the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, among others.

Tickets for the London shows, scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 3 pm and 7:30 pm, are now available for purchase on the Shaw Theatre website. Prices start at £30, offering audiences an affordable opportunity to experience this cultural extravaganza.

Awo The Musical offers an introspective look at one of Africa’s most enduring political legacies, expertly weaving together music and storytelling to create a mesmerising theatrical experience. With a runtime of 90 minutes and no interval, audiences are in for a captivating journey through the life and times of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a true titan of African history.

Awo UK extends its gratitude to its sponsors, including Datamellon, Cruxstone, Purple, Page Assets, and Access Bank UK, whose invaluable support has helped bring this cultural celebration to fruition.
