Actor Tom Holland meets historian namesake on podcast to discuss ‘The Odyssey’

Actor Tom Holland has met his namesake, the author and historian Tom Holland, on a special episode of the podcast The Rest Is History to discuss Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “The Odyssey” and the digital confusion caused by their shared name, per ew.com.

The meeting, broadcast on Sunday, July 12, featured the Marvel star joking with the historian about the search engine complications of their identical names. The actor apologised for effectively making the historian’s name impossible to look up online, though the author replied that he does not Google himself.

The encounter follows online confusion earlier this month when the historian praised the film on social media platform X, leading some users to mistakenly believe the actor was promoting his own project. The historian had described the film as the best cinematic adaptation of a Greek myth he had ever seen.

During the 20-minute episode, the pair discussed the cinematic adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, which opens in theatres on July 17. The actor stars as Telemachus alongside Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus.

The actor praised Nolan’s ability to compress the vast narrative into a 130-page script while maintaining its core emotional relevance. He added that the film explores the contrast between reality and myth, noting that his character represents the reality of the story, while Damon’s character embodies the grand mythology.

The project marks the first major collaboration between the actor and filmmaker Christopher Nolan. The highly anticipated historical drama features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson.
