‘The Odyssey’ beats ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at global box office

Universal Pictures and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has claimed the No. 1 spot at the global weekend box office with $45.96 million, outperforming Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which grossed $44.1 million in its sixth frame, per deadline.com.

The eighth-weekend triumph for The Odyssey was bolstered by the launch of Japan previews on 62 Imax screens, generating $755,000 ahead of its wide release on September 11.

The film grossed an additional $13 million domestically and $32.9 million across 84 international territories, bringing its running global cumulative total to $1.627 billion. Imax screenings contributed significantly, driving $22.2 million in global ticket sales for the film, making it the format’s highest-grossing release of all time at $486 million.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached a global cumulative total of $2.4 billion, maintaining its position as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. The superhero feature earned $18 million domestically over the three-day weekend, rising to $23 million over the Labour Day holiday, alongside $26.1 million from international markets.

The Odyssey continues to set milestones internationally, becoming Universal’s biggest film ever in several key territories, including South Korea, France, Italy and Australia. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day maintains stronger performances in major markets like China, Germany, and the UK, The Odyssey closes in on Jurassic World’s $1.67 billion worldwide cume to become Universal’s highest-grossing film globally.
