“Fajuyi – For Country” stage play to celebrate heroic legacy of Col Adekunle Fajuyi in Ekiti, Lagos

In a remarkable tribute to honour the memory of the heroic Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, PremiumTrust Bank, Nigeria’s fastest-growing financial institution, in collaboration with the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, is set to celebrate His Excellency, Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s one-year anniversary in office with a captivating stage play titled “Fajuyi – For Country.”

The play, produced by the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, promises to chronicle the emotional last hours of the valiant Col Adekunle Fajuyi, who made the ultimate sacrifice for loyalty and country, said a statement by the Duke of Shomolu, Joseph Edgar. 

Col Fajuyi, who was governor of the South West, laid down his life during the counter coup to protect then Head of State, Gen Aguiyi Ironsi, and to ensure the unity of the nation.

Following the resounding success of their previous production, Zik, which attracted high-profile guests, including the respected Obi of Onitsha and Prof Azikiwe, widow of late Owelle of Onitsha and Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Duke of Shomolu Foundation is gearing up to present the story of Fajuyi through brilliant dance and superlative storytelling.

Penned and directed by the esteemed Prof Rasaki Ojo Bakare, the current Ekiti State Commissioner for Arts and Culture, the play features a talented ensemble of 70 thespians, with iconic actors Yemi Shodimu and Barbara Soky taking on the lead roles. “Fajuyi – For Country” will be staged in both Ekiti and at the prestigious Agip Recital Hall of the Muson Centre in Lagos.

Mr Dele Oye, the National President of NACCIMA and a staunch supporter of the arts, will provide the opening remarks. PremiumTrust Bank has expressed its commitment to supporting the arts, recognising its potential to not only impact the economy but also foster cohesion and unity in society.

The Duke of Shomolu Foundation, known for its outstanding productions that have chronicled Nigeria’s history through superbly told stories, has already attracted over 300,000 attendees to their events, featuring notable personalities such as Awo, Jakande, Ogiame Erejuwa, Chief Obasanjo, Emir Sanusi, Sardaunna, and others.

PremiumTrust Bank eagerly anticipates its collaboration with the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, which aims to bring this significant story to Nigerians during a time of national rebirth. The Ekiti showing of “Fajuyi – For Country” will have His Excellency Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as the Special Guest of Honour and is scheduled for October 14th, 2023, followed by a performance at the iconic Agip Recital Hall of the Muson Centre on November 5th, 2023.
