Adedeji Adetayo explores root sounds of Nigeria on a global scale with “Yoruba Odyssey”

Adedeji Adetayo, Nigerian Jazz & Afrofunk/Afrobeats musician, is set to take the world by storm with his latest project, Yoruba Odyssey

In a recent interview, Adetayo shared his plans for touring the project globally with his nine-piece band, all of whom are Nigerian. The album has been receiving rave reviews around the world, with Songline magazine ranking it as the top of the world and Japan music magazine ranking it as number one.

Adetayo, who is based in Europe, has always kept in touch with his roots and frequently visits Nigeria for concerts and festivals. He chose to perform with an all-Nigerian band for the Yoruba Odyssey tour, as the album was deliberately made to focus on exploring the root sounds of Nigeria while expanding its possibilities.

The tour kicked off on June 19th at the Respect festival in Prague, followed by the Roskilde festival in Denmark, Afrika Hertme in the Netherlands, and concerts in Germany. Adetayo and his band will also be playing at the Sfinks festival in Belgium, with more confirmations expected.

Adetayo is not the only Nigerian artiste on tour, as Seun and Femi Kuti, Adekunle Gold, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Etuk Ubong, Eda Oto, and Ade Bantu are also on tour. Adetayo believes that it is a great time for Nigerian music, with a new revitalisation of the continent thanks to the new Afrobeats artistes’ entrepreneurial spirit.

Adetayo also shared his thoughts on the recently created African Music category at the Grammys, calling it a great addition to the academy. He hopes that the category will give chances to every African style and genre of African music.

For younger Nigerian artistes trying to break into the world touring scene, Adetayo advises them to be unique, believe in themselves and be honest about why they are in the game. He also encourages them to learn and acknowledge the masters and take care of business.

Adetayo’s Yoruba Odyssey is a project that goes back to the core of his roots, recorded at the legendary Afrodisia/Decca Studio in Lagos, Nigeria, which has housed giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. The album features a vibrant Yoruba mix and engaging songs that showcase some of the finest players in the Nigerian scene.

Adetayo’s music is a fusion of Yoruba Funk with a twist of everything, and his latest project promises to be a thrilling Yoruba Funk and Afrobeat experience that takes the listener on a fun and wild ride. With his unique sound and entrepreneurial spirit, Adetayo is set to make a significant impact on the global music stage.
