Applications for the second edition of the Guest Artists Space Foundation’s critical writing workshop, offering six Lagos-based cultural practitioners a fully funded three-day professional development programme, close today, Wednesday, September 9.
Titled “(Re)Casting the Canon” and developed by resident Folasade Ologundudu, the workshop, in partnership with the Yinka Shonibare Foundation invites participants to examine how Nigerian and Black artists are framed within Western art history.
The curriculum is inspired by Saidiya Hartman’s book Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments, encouraging writers to pair a Nigerian modernist artist with a contemporary practitioner to build critical narratives.
Selected participants will take part in sessions featuring archival texts, screenings, and discussions focused on Black liberatory thinkers such as Wole Soyinka, Toni Morrison and James Baldwin. The programme runs on September 21, 22 and 24, 2026, at G.A.S. Lagos.
Eligible applicants include emerging art writers, researchers, graduate students, and cultural practitioners based in Lagos. Selected candidates will receive full access to the G.A.S. Library and Picton Archive, daily catering, stationery, and a N50,000 transport allowance. Selected essays may also be considered for publication through G.A.S. Publish.
