Gospel singer Kirk Franklin has entered a partnership with Uptown Records, announced September 8, in a deal involving his Fo Yo Soul Entertainment label and TRIBL Music Group, per vibe.com.
The 56-year-old Grammy Award winner said joining Uptown Records had been an encouraging experience, describing it as “a genuine honour” to be part of the label’s family and adding that he felt energised by the team’s support.
Natina Nimene, Uptown’s Executive/EVP for Urban Audience & Artist Relations at Republic Collective, said Franklin’s influence on gospel music was unmatched across generations and welcomed him as a partner for his next body of work. Phil Thornton, EVP of TRIBL Music Group/Insignia Assets, called Franklin’s legacy undeniable and said the collaboration would help amplify his ongoing output.
To mark the announcement, Franklin released the music video for his single “Thank You For Everything,” featuring gospel veteran Karen Clark Sheard of the Clark Sisters. The video premiered live on BET Her.
The signing is Uptown Records’ latest addition following the label’s revival as it marks its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1986 by the late music executive Andre Harrell, Uptown became one of the most influential labels of the late 1980s and early 1990s, launching artists including Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, Heavy D and Christopher Williams. Franklin joins a current roster that includes Yung Miami, G Herbo, Trap Dickey, ATL Jacob and 9B Meechie.
