Universal Pictures has revealed that Christopher Nolan’s next directorial venture will be an ambitious adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, featuring revolutionary IMAX technology and an ensemble cast of industry heavyweights, per variety.com.
The film, slated for release on July 17, 2026, will transform the ancient Greek epic into what Universal describes as a “mythic action epic.” The project marks Nolan’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning triumph Oppenheimer and promises to bring Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX screens in unprecedented fashion using newly developed film technology.
The star-studded cast reads like a who’s who of Hollywood elite, featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. Production is expected to commence in early 2025, with Nolan both writing and producing alongside Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.
The announcement has already generated buzz, particularly after Tom Holland’s recent candid admission on “The Dish” podcast about signing onto the project with limited knowledge of its details. “I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. He kind of loosely pitched what it is,” Holland revealed, highlighting the characteristic secrecy surrounding Nolan’s projects.
The Odyssey, one of literature’s most enduring works, follows the Greek hero Odysseus on his turbulent decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. While the epic has seen various adaptations, including Kirk Douglas’s Ulysses (1954) and the loosely inspired O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), Nolan’s version promises to be the most technologically advanced and ambitious interpretation to date.
This announcement cements Universal’s continued partnership with Nolan following their successful collaboration on Oppenheimer, suggesting another potential critical and commercial triumph in the making.
