‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ becomes highest-grossing Hollywood film in India

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the highest-grossing Hollywood film of all time in India, earning $52.8m in 11 days to overtake James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way Of Water, per deadline.com.

The Sony/Marvel title, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, took $10.6 million over the weekend, according to figures reported on August 10. It opened in India on July 30, a day ahead of its global release, and has faced limited competition.

The film has driven a strong summer for Hollywood in India. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which opened July 17, and early summer release Obsession, which opened May 29, have both reportedly crossed the INR1B ($10M) benchmark.

Hollywood and other foreign films typically account for 10-15% of the Indian market, which is dominated by local titles. In 2025, international films held a 10% share, with Avatar: Fire And Ash the top Hollywood grosser on $26.4M, according to Ormax Media. The highest-grossing local film that year was Hindi-language action epic Dhurandhar on $104.8M.

In the first half of 2026, international films held an 8% share. Obsession grossed around $10M (INR1B) and Project Hail Mary took $9.2M (INR880M). Dhurandhar: The Revenge topped the chart for the period with $132M.

Overall box office revenues in India reached $661.66M (INR63.98B) for the six months from January to June 2026, Ormax Media reported. That makes it the highest-grossing first half since the pandemic and about 10% ahead of the same period in 2025.

Competition is set to increase this weekend with the release of two major local films, Batwara 1947 starring Sunny Deol and Awarapan 2, directed by Nitin Kakkar and starring Emraan Hashmi.

Upcoming releases expected to sustain momentum include Geetu Mohandas’ Toxic starring Yash, scheduled for August 26, and Ramayana: Part 1, slated for Diwali in November after being picked up by Sony for worldwide distribution.
