The Durban FilmMart (DFM) 2024 will convene under the theme “African Visions Unleashed: From Disruption to Accountability” from July 19-22.
This year’s event will notably feature a Climate Focus stream, underscoring DFM’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges through the power of film. In collaboration with the Doc Society – Climate Story Unit, Climate Story Lab South Africa, STEPS and the Global Impact Producers Alliance (GIPA), this initiative aims to foster sustainable filmmaking practices and impactful storytelling.
The Climate Focus will host a series of industry sessions featuring prominent filmmakers and activists such as Anita Khanna, Emily Wanja, Nasreen Al-Amin, Kudzayi Ngwerume and Peter Murimi. These sessions will cover critical topics like the role of creatives in addressing the climate crisis and developing effective impact strategies.
One session, “Don’t Stop Talking About Climate Chaos!,” will explore how African communities can use creative mediums to combat the existential threat of climate change. Another, “Innovative Partnerships and Pathways to Reach Audiences,” will draw lessons from the HIV/AIDS pandemic to highlight the collective effort needed to tackle climate change effectively.
An exciting component of the event is the Impact Hackathon, where participants will engage in a dynamic, interactive session with impact strategists, followed by networking opportunities with GIPA members.
DFM 2024 invites filmmakers, activists and industry professionals to join these essential conversations and help shape a sustainable future for African cinema. Registration is open now, with full event passes priced at R2000 and day passes at R500.
