Hugh Lauter Levin, a prominent figure in the world of publishing, breathed his last on January 9 at the age of 72, per publishersweekly.com.
Levin’s illustrious career spanned decades, beginning with his tenure as a vice president at Abrams Books, followed by the establishment of his own publishing venture, Hugh Lauter Levin Associates (HLLA), which focused on producing captivating illustrated books.
Over the years, HLLA flourished, releasing more than 250 titles encompassing art, photography, military history, and Judaica, until its acquisition by Rizzoli in 2007.
Even after the sale of HLLA, Levin remained an influential figure in the industry, serving as a consultant for various publishing firms and penning a series of humour books for children. His contributions were internationally recognized when he was honoured as a Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2023.
Levin’s legacy lives on through his family, including his wife, Cynthia; son, Lucas, and daughter-in-law, Veena; grandson, Ashton; brother, Jeremy; and sister, Wendy Newby, along with her husband, Gordon Newby.
