My Life in the Bush of Books: Leila Aboulela – Caine Prize winner and author of Minaret, Bird Summons, Lyrics Alley, Elsewhere, Home etc.

1.    Favourite book ever: The Wedding of Zein by Tayeb Salih.  It tells the story of how a village idiot, against the odds, ends up marrying the most beautiful girl in the village.
2.    Why?: Because it is rooted in Sudanese tradition and Islamic mysticism.  I like to read it whenever I am homesick for Sudan.

3.    Last book read?: An Orchestra of Minorities by  Chigozie Obioma. It’s a passionate love story and a fascinating introduction to Igbo cosmology.

4.    Packing for a journey and allowed to take one book. What will it be?: Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov  or Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook
5.    Why?: Because I need something long enough to last the whole journey and accessible enough to be read when fatigued.

6.    Who is your favourite author/writer?: Jean Rhys
7.    Do you think Nigerians read?: Yes definitely. The audiences at the Ake Festival do Nigeria proud.
