Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, the artist and prominent art world commentator widely known by her pseudonym Jerry Gogosian, has been found dead in her room at the Rosewood Hotel in São Paulo, Brazil, per art news.com.
The death is being treated as suspicious by local authorities, who have requested forensic tests following the discovery of her body on the afternoon of May 31.

According to a report by Brazilian television network Globo, hotel staff discovered Helphenstein alongside an empty vodka bottle, broken glass and unidentified pills. A man identifying himself as her plastic surgeon raised the alarm after she failed to answer her phone, noting she had been in the country for three weeks undergoing a surgical procedure. The Rosewood São Paulo confirmed the death and stated it is cooperating fully with the police investigation. Globo also reported that a complaint regarding drunken behaviour had been lodged against Helphenstein and her companions on May 30.
Helphenstein rose to international prominence through her satirical Instagram account, which launched in 2018 and amassed 145,000 followers by lampooning the insular art market. Operating under a moniker blending the names of critic Jerry Saltz and dealer Larry Gagosian, she initially maintained anonymity before revealing her identity in 2020. Her platform expanded to include the Art Smack podcast and the Jerry Report newsletter, alongside major corporate collaborations with Sotheby’s and luxury brands.
Beyond satire, Helphenstein’s digital platform wielded significant institutional influence. In 2020, her amplification of sexual harassment allegations led to the dismissal of a high-profile director at the Gagosian gallery, demonstrating the power of social media to disrupt traditional art world power structures.
In recent years, Helphenstein sought to transition away from the digital persona, curating a Sotheby’s sale in 2022 and signing with United Talent Agency’s (UTA) Fine Arts division in February 2024. Although she announced plans last June to wind down the Instagram account, her commercial trajectory faced shifts when UTA closed its specialised fine arts department later that year.
