Idris Elba to build film studio in Zanzibar

Idris Elba has been granted land in Zanzibar, Tanzania, to establish a state-of-the-art film studio, per bbc.com. The announcement, made at the Zanzibar International Film Festival, marks a significant step forward in Elba’s vision to bolster the continent’s cinematic landscape.

Zanzibar’s Investment Minister, Shariff Ali Shariff, revealed the news, playfully dubbing the potential venture “Zollywood” or “Zawood.” This move comes roughly 18 months after Elba’s initial discussions with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

The Golden Globe-winning star, known for his roles in Luther and The Wire, has long advocated for developing Africa’s film industry. Elba, who has roots in Sierra Leone and Ghana, believes this studio could rival those in Hollywood, Nollywood and Bollywood, potentially transforming Zanzibar’s picturesque landscapes into a bustling filmmaking hub.

This initiative aligns with Elba’s broader vision for African cinema. He has previously announced plans for a studio in Ghana, highlighting the continent’s abundant talent but noting the lack of adequate facilities. A 2022 UNESCO report echoes this sentiment, citing challenges such as piracy and insufficient training opportunities despite the industry’s growth.

Elba’s ambitious projects extend beyond filmmaking. He’s also exploring the creation of an eco-friendly “smart city” in Sierra Leone, his father’s homeland, demonstrating his commitment to sustainable development across various sectors in Africa.
