As the music world eagerly awaits the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 4, 2024, all eyes are on the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category. The lineup of nominees promises an exhilarating competition, showcasing the diverse musical talents emerging from the continent.
The nominees for this groundbreaking category include the renowned Burna Boy with his track “City Boys,” Asake’s infectious “Amapiano,” Davido’s collaboration with Musa Makamu in “Unavailable,” and the rising star Ayra Starr with her hit “Rush.” Adding to the competition is South Africa’s Tyla Seethal, nominated for her sensational single, ‘Water.’
The introduction of the Best African Music Performance category underscores the Grammys’ recognition of Africa’s profound influence on global music. The winner will be unveiled at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA, during the grand ceremony.
A notable contender in another category is Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, who received a nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media for her contribution to the soundtrack of the film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” with the song “Lift Me Up.”
Davido, a heavyweight in the African music scene, has additional nominations in the Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance categories, expressing his aspirations to secure multiple wins.
All eyes are also on Burna Boy, a previous Grammy Award winner, who is nominated in three categories—Best Melodic Rap, Best Global Music Album, and Best Global Music Performance. His performance at the ceremony is anticipated by fans worldwide.
Joining the star-studded lineup are global sensations Billie Eilish, Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, and Luke Combs, among others. The stage is set for a night filled with sensational performances and potential historic wins.
In addition to the African representation, other top nominees for the night include SZA, Victoria Monet, and Phoebe Bridgers. The event, hosted for the fourth consecutive year by comedian Trevor Noah, promises an unforgettable celebration of musical excellence.
An impressive list of presenters, including Christina Aguilera, Lionel Richie, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey, will add glamour to the awards ceremony.
The show will also feature a star-studded lineup of performers, including Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Fantasia Barrino and Jon Batiste paying tribute to music legends during the “In Memoriam” segment.
For music enthusiasts eager to catch the action, the ceremony will be broadcast on CBS or available for live streaming on Paramount+. The excitement begins with “Live From E!: 2024 Grammys,” hosted by Laverne Cox and comedian Heather McMahan, airing at 6 pm ET/3 pm. PT, providing a sneak peek into the red-carpet festivities.
