David Bruckner to direct Sydney Sweeney in “The Caretaker”

Universal Pictures has attached David Bruckner to write and direct the supernatural horror “The Caretaker,” set to star Sydney Sweeney, per flickeringmyth.com.

The project, first acquired by the studio in 2022, will see Bruckner (The Night House, Hellraiser) adapt Marcus Kliewer’s upcoming novel. Sweeney will also produce alongside Michael Bay and Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes banner.

Based on Kliewer’s novel, scheduled for publication this week, the story follows Macy Mullins (Sweeney), a young woman who accepts a seemingly straightforward three-day caretaking job advertised on Craigslist. The position, located on the remote Oregon Coast, soon proves far more dangerous than she anticipated, with Mullins finding herself as the potential sole defence against an incomprehensible evil dwelling on the property.

This announcement follows Sweeney’s recent commercial success with the Lionsgate thriller The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig, which has grossed $401.7 million globally. A sequel, “The Housemaid’s Secret,” has already been dated for release in December 2027.

Sweeney can also currently be seen reprising her role as Cassie in the third season of HBO’s Euphoria. The deal unites major figures in the horror and blockbuster spheres, combining Bruckner’s genre expertise with Bay and Fuller’s production experience.
