Tiwa Savage, currently doing media runs following the release of her hot new single, 49-99, produced by Pheelz and Olamide, has made some startling revelations.
Her new single riffs off a Fela Anikulapo Kuti lyric – “49 sitting 99 standing”- from his popular tune, Suffering and Smiling. Speaking on her return to Nigeria and struggle to break into the industry, Jam Jam’s mum said it was an uphill task.
In an interview with London-based Nigerian OAP, Shopsy, Tiwa said no Nigerian label wanted to sign her from Storm to Mo’hits and EME Records. She said it was T-Billz who urged her to go solo before she finally berthed at Don Jazzy’s Mavin after the break up of Mo’hits.
According to her, “when I first moved to Nigeria, nobody wanted to touch me. I went to Storm Records they said No, we already have a female artiste, I went to EME, Banky actually said No, I went to Mo’Hits they said No, so Teejay said we’re going to do it ourselves. Me I was like, we don’t have money o. but we decided to do it. Years later when Mo’Hits broke up I went back to Jazzy and I was like ‘have you changed your mind?’ and he was like let’s do this and he signed me up to Mavin.”
49-99 was released worldwide yesterday September 5, 2019.
