Amber Heard makes big screen return with “In the Fire”

Amber Heard has said that her new film In the Fire, which premiered on June 25th at the 69th Taormina Film Festival in Italy, is “about love”.

This is Heard’s first new film release since the high-profile legal battle with  her ex-husband, Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp.

She spoke with PEOPLE at the festival about the film.

The film is a supernatural thriller that stars Heard as a pioneering psychiatrist who sets out to treat a desperate child at a time when psychiatry is not yet a respected science. The movie is set in 1899 and follows a 38-year-old American psychiatrist as she arrives on a rich farm in Colombia after being called to solve the case of a disturbed child following increasingly insistent accusations that the child is the devil.

Speaking ahead of the film’s premiere, Heard said that “In the Fire” is “a beautiful movie about the almost supernatural effect and force of love. It is about the boundaries that love can cross and its creation, and really about the overwhelming power that love has”. She added that the film is a “movie about love”.

Heard is best known for her roles in films such as Aquaman and The Rum Diary. She is also set to appear in the forthcoming DC Comics sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”. Meanwhile, Depp appeared at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year for the premiere of his first film since the trial, the French-language movie Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan.

Heard has starred in several movies throughout her career with some of her notable film credits including: All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006), Alpha Dog (2006), Never Back Down (2008), Pineapple Express (2008) and Zombieland (2009).

Others are The Stepfather (2009), The Joneses (2009), The Rum Diary (2011), Drive Angry (2011), Magic Mike XXL (2015), London Fields (2018), Gully (2019) and Run Away with Me (2021).

Heard has also made appearances on television shows such as The Playboy Club, Californication, and The Stand.
