Former US President Barack Obama has unveiled his annual summer reading list for 2026, offering a selection that balances prominent literary works with lesser-known titles, per bookriot.com.
Published via social media on July 29, the 11-book recommendations continue a tradition dating back to his presidency of highlighting standout fiction and non-fiction.
This year’s curated selection showcases high-profile authors, including Pulitzer Prize winners Colson Whitehead, George Saunders and Elizabeth Strout, as well as novelist Ann Patchett. Among the notable additions are Tayari Jones’s historical fiction novel Kin, Strout’s The Things We Never Say, Saunders’s Vigil and Whitehead’s Cool Machine.
The list also spotlights non-fiction contributions exploring history and global systems, such as Beverly Gage’s This Land is Your Land, Michael Pollan’s A World Appears and Roopika Risam’s Data Empire: The Power of Information to Organize, Control, and Dominate. Alongside established voices, Obama highlighted debut fiction, including Vincent Yu’s novel Seek Immediate Shelter, as well as works by Camille Bordas and Ben Lerner.
Since his time in the White House, Obama’s seasonal book recommendations have routinely boosted sales and public visibility for the featured authors. Following his established pattern, he is expected to publish a separate list detailing his favourite books of the year in December.
