Kirsten Dunst relished “expressing rage” in Ruben Östlund’s new satire

Kirsten Dunst enjoyed being able to “express her rage” and embrace her dark side while filming Ruben Östlund’s upcoming satirical black comedy, The Entertainment System Is Down, per film-news.co.uk.

The film, which is currently in post-production, is set almost entirely on a plane and depicts the chaos that unfolds when the in-flight entertainment system breaks down, leaving passengers to contend with extreme boredom during the lengthy flight.

Dunst plays a character who discovers her husband has been unfaithful during the journey, leading to a lengthy and public discourse about the state of their marriage. The Bring It On star told Town & Country magazine she relished the opportunity to “act out the worst parts of [her] personality” by playing the scorned spouse.

“Things that you don’t get to explore in your real life. I got to vomit onscreen. I was able to express my rage and also my b**chiness,” she shared. “It felt great!”

Dunst was so keen to work with the Triangle of Sadness director Östlund that she actively auditioned for the Swedish filmmaker after hearing he initially intended to “hire European actors.” To win the role, the actress recorded herself on an iPhone in her guesthouse, improvising a scene in which she discovers her husband’s infidelity by breaking into his phone.

Östlund, who ultimately gave her the role, was full of praise for the Spider-Man star. He told the publication, “Kirsten doesn’t have a single frame of dishonesty. She’s there 100 per cent.”

The film was shot earlier this year in Budapest, Hungary, and also features an all-star ensemble cast including Keanu Reeves, Daniel Brühl, and Samantha Morton.
