Tory Lanez’s legal team challenges conviction in appeals court

Tory Lanez is making another push to overturn his 2022 conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, with his legal team arguing in an appeals court that the original trial was a “miscarriage of justice,” per vibe.com. The case, which has captivated the music world and sparked intense debate, is now under review by a panel of five judges.

During a hearing, the rapper’s attorney, Crystal Morgan, claimed that the jury was misled by the prosecution’s handling of DNA evidence. She stated that forensic tests showed a “one in a million” chance of his DNA being on the firearm, and argued that the prosecution’s misrepresentation of this evidence denied Lanez a fair trial. “If our jury had heard that Mr. Peterson, maybe one in a million, touched the gun, I believe that would have been enough to tip that scale and show reasonable doubt,” Morgan said.

In a counter-argument, Deputy Attorney General Michael C. Keller maintained that the evidence against Lanez was compelling. He cited instances where the rapper, whose birth name is Daystar Peterson, “tacitly admitted” to the shooting, arguing that he was “clearly accepting responsibility for something very big.”

The appeals court’s decision is expected in the coming weeks or months. Should the court uphold the verdict, Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence, can seek an appeal through the California Supreme Court.
