‘Eddington’ starring Joaquin Phoenix gets 5-minute Cannes standing ovation

Joaquin Phoenix, the enigmatic star, visibly teared up on Friday as Ari Aster’s highly anticipated “MAGA Western,” Eddington, received a rapturous five-minute standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere, per variety.com. The film, also starring Emma Stone, Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal, delves into the volatile political and societal landscape of America circa May 2020, depicting a tense standoff in a small New Mexico town that pits neighbour against neighbour.

While the international audience largely embraced Aster’s distinct commentary, not all were completely on board. A noticeable trickle of viewers, numbering around 20, exited the Palais during the screening, with a further scattering as the credits approached.

Despite the mixed reactions within the theatre, Aster appeared humbled by the reception. “I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what you think. Sorry, I guess? Thank you, I guess?” he offered with his characteristic self-deprecation. He added, “I feel very privileged to be here. This is a dream come true. Thank you so much for having me.”

Eddington marks Aster’s Cannes debut, a departure from his previous films Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid, which bypassed the festival circuit. Phoenix, however, is no stranger to Cannes, having won Best Actor in 2017 for You Were Never Really Here.

Following its Cannes premiere, the A24 film is slated for a theatrical release on July 18th, promising to spark further conversation about its timely and provocative themes.
