Ewan McGregor takes on 1st theatre role in 17 years

Ewan McGregor is set to make a triumphant return to live theatre after a nearly two-decade absence, per bbc.com/. The acclaimed Scottish actor will headline My Master Builder at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre from April to July, marking his first stage performance since 2006.

McGregor, best known for film roles in Trainspotting and Star Wars, described his theatrical homecoming as a serendipitous moment of artistic synchronicity. “I had just finished reading Ibsen’s The Master Builder when Michael Grandage contacted me,” he revealed, describing the encounter as a “moment of total serendipity.”

The production, inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 play, is a contemporary reimagining written by US playwright Lila Raicek. McGregor praised the script’s modern exploration of sexual politics, calling it a “fascinating” and “grown-up” examination of complex social dynamics.

For the 53-year-old actor, returning to theatre is more than just a professional milestone—it’s a spiritual experience. “Theatre teaches you so much about acting,” McGregor explained. “The live experience, the power of storytelling—it’s very good for the soul.”

This stage comeback follows McGregor’s recent Hollywood Walk of Fame honor and continues his illustrious career spanning film, television, and now, theatre. His collaboration with director Michael Grandage, with whom he previously worked on Othello and Guys and Dolls, promises an electrifying performance.

Audiences can witness McGregor’s theatrical return when My Master Builder begins previews on 17 April, running until 12 July at Wyndham’s Theatre—a must-see event for theatre and film enthusiasts alike.
