‘Joker 2’ stumbles with $40m debut, tops international box office with $81.1m

The highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster hit Joker has experienced a mixed reception at the box office. While Joker: Folie à Deux has dominated international markets, its domestic debut fell short of expectations.

Despite opening at number one with $40 million in the United States and Canada, the film’s performance failed to match the record-breaking success of its predecessor. The original Joker raked in $96.2 million during its opening weekend in 2019, setting an October box office record. The underwhelming domestic performance of Joker 2 has raised concerns for Warner Bros., especially considering the film’s substantial $200 million budget.

However, the sequel has found significant success overseas, grossing an estimated $81.1 million in international markets. This strong international performance has helped mitigate the impact of the weaker domestic debut. While the film’s global total of $121.1 million is still below the original Joker’s $1.07 billion worldwide gross, it remains to be seen how the sequel will perform in the coming weeks.

The mixed reception for Joker 2 can be attributed to several factors, including its unconventional musical elements and the divisive critical reviews. Some critics praised the film’s bold artistic choices, while others found it to be a departure from the gritty realism of the original.

Despite the challenges faced by Joker 2 in the domestic market, its international success demonstrates the enduring appeal of the Joker character and the potential for unconventional comic book films to find a global audience. As the film continues to expand its release in international markets, it remains to be seen whether it can ultimately achieve the same level of commercial success as its predecessor.
