‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ movie breaks box office records

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a biopic directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, has shattered box office records in Nigeria and West Africa. 

The film, which chronicles the life and legacy of the trailblazing Nigerian activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, has taken the region by storm, surpassing the previous record held by Ayinla.

The director expressed her gratitude on social media, thanking audiences for their overwhelming support: “Thank you all for making this happen. We broke the record of highest BIOPIC ever sold in Nigeria and West Africa. Ayinla held this record previously. This is a difficult genre to sell but with God, nothing is impossible and the guys tagged amongst many others made it possible.”

The film has been praised for its compelling portrayal of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a formidable figure in Nigeria’s history known for her activism and advocacy for women’s rights. Her story, brought to life on the big screen, has resonated deeply with viewers, drawing large crowds and sparking widespread conversations about her contributions to Nigerian society.

With over a thousand likes and numerous comments, Austen-Peters’ announcement on social media has ignited further interest in the film. FunmilayoRansome-Kuti, which hit cinemas on Friday, May 17, many say, is not just a movie; it’s a movement, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

The biopic of the famed activist and mother of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, took home Best Movie Writing at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), and Best Movie and Best Screenplay at the 12th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF).

Funmilayo Ransome Kuti is written by Tunde Babalola and stars a host of talented actors including Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, Adunni Ade, Adebayo Salami, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko and a host of others, and also features appearances by Femi Kuti and Yeni Kuti, the late icon’s grandchildren.

The critical acclaim and commercial success of the film highlight the growing interest in biopics and stories that celebrate African heroes.
