Eddie Murphy & family shine in ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’

The long-awaited third installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” brings a unique blend of action, nostalgia, and family dynamics to the screen, per ew.com.

In the movie, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as rogue detective Axel Foley, who must reconcile with his estranged daughter to save her life. Adding a real-life twist, Murphy’s daughter Bria plays a significant role, creating a “surreal” experience for the veteran actor.

One memorable scene features Foley being arrested while attempting to commandeer a traffic cop’s diminutive car for a high-speed chase. The traffic cop, played by Bria Murphy, arrests her real-life father. Further complicating Foley’s troubles, another cop tases him—portrayed by Murphy’s new son-in-law. “She’s the one that arrests me,” Murphy told Al Roker on Today. “And the other scene when I get arrested in the movie, that’s my son-in-law tasing me in the neck. It was right after they got married. It was on the set, tasing me in my neck. I was like, ‘This is surreal.'”

Fans of the original films will be delighted by the return of John Ashton as John Taggart and Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood, reuniting in a recreation of the iconic squad car scene.

Director Mark Molloy, a longtime fan of the franchise, expressed his excitement about working with the legendary trio. “I always had that image of those three guys on a stakeout in the car together; it was just imprinted in my brain,” Molloy shared with Entertainment Weekly. “And then I remember sitting with the three of them in that car, and I actually happened to look around at the crew filming it. I just saw on everyone’s faces, like, Oh man, this is exactly where we want to be right now.”

In the film, Taylour Paige plays Jane, Foley’s daughter, who gets entangled in a conspiracy while investigating an alleged cop killer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt co-stars as Jane’s ex, Detective Bobby Abbott, adding further intrigue to the plot.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” premieres on Netflix on July 3.
