Award-winning author Dave Eggers has released his latest novel, Contrapposto, marking his first adult-oriented fiction in five years, according to a parade.com report.
The book, which has already drawn significant critical acclaim, follows the 70-year relationship of lifelong friends and occasional lovers, Cricket and Olympia, as they navigate the professional art world.
The New York Times has praised the work as an “earthy, warm return to form” for the 56-year-old writer.

Eggers revealed that the foundation for the novel had been developing for nearly two decades. He began accumulating notes and character sketches up to 20 years ago, a practice standard for his writing process. The structural breakthrough for the narrative came when he decided to format the book into discrete chronological chapters that leap forward by eight to 10 years, allowing him to cover seven decades without creating an unwieldy manuscript.
Drawing on his own background in fine arts and his time writing for various art publications in the 1990s, Eggers designed the book to critique the exclusionary nature of the modern art industry. He noted that mid-20th-century art theory and terminology often alienated the public. Eggers stated that visual art should be simple to enjoy without requiring formal preparation or complex academic theory.
The novel explores the contrasting approaches of its two protagonists. While Olympia adapts comfortably to the commercialisation of her work, Cricket struggles with market forces and the pressures of deadlines imposed by galleries. Eggers used this dynamic to explore the tension between artistic creation and commercial industry, highlighting that the creative process should ideally remain a source of pure pleasure.
Reflecting on his broader career, which began at age 30 with *A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius*, Eggers noted that while the process of constructing a novel becomes demystified over time, the connection between a book and its audience remains unpredictable. He emphasized that the chemistry of how a reader resonates with a text cannot be engineered.
Eggers is widely recognised as one of the most prolific authors of his generation, transitioning across genres ranging from literary drama to science fiction and children’s literature. His previous prominent works include *The Circle* and *A Hologram for the King*, both of which achieved mainstream commercial success and critical praise for their thematic depth.
Contrapposto is published and available now at all major retail outlets.
