Celebrities star in short films for International Booker Prize

Dua Lipa, Tobias Menzies and David Jonsson are set to bring literature to life in a series of short films featuring excerpts from this year’s International Booker Prize shortlist, per variety.com. Produced in collaboration with Merman, the production company of Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford, the six short films aim to spotlight the diverse literary voices recognised by the prestigious award.

Pop sensation Dua Lipa will be reading from la Genberg’s The Details, while Tobias Menzies of The Crown fame will lend his voice to Mater 2-10 by Hwang Sok-yong. David Jonsson, known for his role in Rye Lane, will read from Not a River by Selva Almada, among others.

The International Booker Prize, renowned for honouring translated fiction, has previously seen Lipa’s involvement. In 2022, she delivered a keynote speech at the prize ceremony and has worked with the Booker Prize’s prison initiative, Books Unlocked.

Lipa expressed her excitement, stating, “Translated fiction is a hand extended from one culture to another. It allows us to understand each other better, and to see the world in a new light.”

Directed by Charlotte Hamblin, known for her work on Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife, the short films will be available on the Booker Prize’s website and showcased at the prize ceremony in London on May 21st.
