Celebrating the Life of Prof Kole Omotoso

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 to celebrate the life of Prof Kole Omotoso, a renowned Nigerian author, scholar and pop culture icon. 

The service will be held at Vodacom World 1st fl., Connect 500 South, Midrand, from 12:00 to 14:00 (GMT +2).

Omotoso was born in Akure, Nigeria, on April 21, 1943. He studied at King’s College, Lagos, the University of Ibadan, and the University of Edinburgh. He published 16 books across genres, including scholarly works on African literature. His most famous novel, Just Before Dawn, was controversial and led him to leave Nigeria.

Prof. Omotoso lived a life of great achievement. He was a professor of English at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa and a patron of the Etisalat Prize for Literature. He was also a popular television personality, appearing in a number of commercials for Vodacom mobile phones.

The memorial service will be an opportunity to celebrate Prof. Omotoso’s life and legacy. It will be a time to reflect on his contributions to African literature, his impact on the lives of his students and colleagues, and his role as a cultural icon.
