Brad Pitt has confirmed he is no longer sober after seven years, telling esquire.com he has resumed drinking alcohol in moderation while maintaining strict personal limits.
The 62-year-old actor disclosed the change during an interview at his Los Angeles home, offering the reporter a glass of wine before addressing his sobriety. “I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” Pitt said. He added that he now drinks in a “more restrained manner” after learning that overindulgence does not work for him.
Pitt said he can have “a few” drinks but not “a lot,” stressing the need to remain professional about his consumption. “I got overconfident a couple times, went, ‘Yep, nope, not good for me,’” he said, noting he does not drink “in big quantities.”
A source told pagesix.com the move is a “very personal decision” unique to Pitt’s circumstances after years of reflection on his relationship with alcohol. The insider said Pitt feels comfortable making a different choice at this stage, emphasising moderation and self-awareness, and that the decision does not diminish what he gained during his time sober.
Pitt previously said he stopped drinking following his 2016 separation from Angelina Jolie. In June 2025, he recalled attending his first AA meeting during a particularly difficult period, describing himself as “pretty much on my knees” and “really open.” His divorce from Jolie was finalised in December 2024 after more than eight years of legal proceedings. The couple share six children: Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18.
Pitt’s comments come as public discussion continues around long-term sobriety, moderation and individual recovery paths.
