Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 4.002 million equivalent album units, the largest week for any album since Luminate began electronic tracking in 1991, per billboard.com.
It is Swift’s 15th chart-topping album, taking her past Drake and JAY-Z for the most No. 1s among soloists.
The album earned the units in the US in the week ending October 9, following its October 3 release, according to Luminate. Pure album sales accounted for 3,479,500 of the total, also a modern-era record. Streaming equivalent albums contributed 522,600 units, equal to 680.9 million on-demand streams.
The previous records belonged to Adele’s 25, which opened with 3.482 million units, including 3.378 million in sales, in November 2015.
Only The Beatles, with 19 No. 1 albums, have more chart-toppers than Swift since the Billboard 200 began regular weekly publication in 1956. Drake and JAY-Z each have 14. Every one of Swift’s full-length studio albums and rerecorded projects, from 2008’s Fearless onwards, has debuted at No. 1.
The album had no track equivalent album units, as none of its songs were sold individually on digital retail services. It is the first No. 1 on the chart without such units since the Billboard 200 began ranking by equivalent units with the chart dated December 13, 2014.
Swift announced the album on August 12, and her webstore began taking preorders soon afterwards. In release week she promoted it on radio and appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 6 and Late Night with Seth Meyers on October 8. Her film, Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, topped the US and Canada box office over the October 3-5 weekend. The video for the lead single, The Fate of Ophelia, was released on October 5.
The album sold 2.7 million copies on its first day, a figure likely boosted by physical and digital preorders delivered or redeemed on release day. Sales were driven by 38 versions: 27 physical and 11 digital. The physical editions comprised 16 CDs, two deluxe CD boxed sets with branded clothing, eight vinyl LPs and one cassette. Swift’s webstore exclusively sold 10 of the CD editions, seven of the vinyl LPs and the cassette. Target had an exclusive CD and vinyl LP.
Vinyl sales reached 1.334 million across eight editions, the biggest week for a vinyl album in the modern era. Swift now holds eight of the top 10 vinyl sales weeks since 1991, including the top six.
It is Swift’s eighth album to sell at least 1 million copies in a single week, following The Tortured Poets Department, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), Midnights, reputation, 1989, Red and Speak Now. No other act has achieved this with eight different albums in the modern era. There have been 27 million-selling weeks by 25 albums in that period.
Swift also has six of the 10 biggest weeks by equivalent units since 2014. Her previous best, The Tortured Poets Department, earned 2.610 million units in May 2024.
The album’s 680.9 million streams make it the largest streaming week of 2025 and the fourth-biggest ever. The record remains The Tortured Poets Department’s 891.37 million, achieved with 31 songs on its deluxe edition. Showgirl was available in a standard 12-song edition and two track-by-track commentary editions, one of which included lyric videos.
Album sales have fallen sharply since their peak. In 2000, 785 million albums were sold in the US. Sales in 2025 stood at 62.43 million through October 2, with nearly half, or 30 million, from vinyl.
Elsewhere on the chart, Showgirl is the only debut in the top 10. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack falls to No. 2 with 96,000 units, followed by Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem (82,000), Cardi B’s AM I THE DRAMA? (63,000), Sabrina Carpenter’s Man’s Best Friend (50,000) and Bad Bunny’s DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS (41,000). Bad Bunny rose from No. 10 after hosting Saturday Night Live on October 4.
