Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings will release a centennial reissue of The Complete Columbia Recordings (1955–1961) by Miles Davis and John Coltrane on Nov 6, available in 9xLP and 6xCD editions, per consequence.net.
Marking the centennial birth year of both jazz icons born in 1926, the pre-order collection features 58 tracks chronicling their historic collaboration.
Material spans core Davis albums such as Kind of Blue, Milestones, and ‘Round About Midnight, alongside cross-project appearances and 18 tracks exclusive to the 2000 original box set.
Produced originally by Michael Cuscuna and Bob Belden, a set that won Best Boxed Set and Best Liner Notes at the 2001 Grammy Awards, the physical packages have been refreshed. The vinyl box houses individually designed jackets, a slipcase, and a 60-page book featuring essays and photographs by George Avakian and Jimmy Cobb, plus liner notes by Bob Blumenthal and Bill Evans. The CD edition contains a 116-page book and six minijackets in a slipcase.
A separate double LP highlight compilation titled The Best Of Miles Davis & John Coltrane (1955–1961) will also be issued. This follows January’s archival reissue of Miles Davis, The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965.
Released initially in 2000, the Davis-Coltrane Columbia archive remains a benchmark historical document of mid-century modal and hard-bop jazz evolution.
