Impulse! Records has announced the upcoming release of The Tiberi Tapes, a box set featuring unreleased live recordings of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane captured by fellow musician Frank Tiberi during club performances in the 1960s, per udiscovermusic.com.
The collection compiles private recordings made by Tiberi at New York and Philadelphia venues starting in 1960. Using a portable reel-to-reel machine concealed in a bag, Tiberi recorded more than 26 hours of music across 80 reels to study Coltrane’s harmonic approach and performance style.
Scheduled for release on November 6, the box set will be available in 4LP, 3CD, and digital formats. The 11-track collection includes performances of “Giant Steps,” “Thing In D Flat,” “Lover” and “Impressions.” An advance track of “Giant Steps” recorded at 226 BPM has been released ahead of the full album.
The announcement coincides with the 100th anniversary of Coltrane’s birth, serving as a central component of the year’s centennial celebrations for one of the 20th century’s most influential musicians.
