Our call for participation in our inaugural thelagosreview Writing Weekend received a very enthusiastic response wirh over 100 entries in one month.
We were particularly delighted by the quality, diversity and spread of entries from young male and female writers from as far afield as Kano and Maiduguri.
Successful entrants will be contacted in the weeks ahead to provide proof of age and confirm availability for the weekend which is now scheduled to hold from September 10 to 13, 2026 in Lagos.
The weekend is planned as master classes for 15 lucky members of our first cohort who will, over 3 days, learn how to write compelling and insightful music, book and movie reviews as well as essays.
Our facilitators would be led by Ellah Allfrey Wakatama, OBE, Hon. FRSL, Editor-at-large at Canongate, former deputy editor at Granta, past Booker prize and International Dublin Literary award judge and Chair of the AKO Caine Prize and thelagosreview.ng advisory board.
Others are Oris Aigbokhaevbolo, film critic, former Golden Globe judge and moving spirit behind the newly unveiled Africa Critics Award; Akumbu Uche, award winning writer and peerless book reviewer and Toni Kan, award winning poet, novelist, biographer, critic and co- founder thelagosreview.ng.
The weekend will conclude with a group reading at Rovingheights bookshop at the Landmark Center where Toni Kan will be in conversation with Ellah Wakatama with a focus on his book, Riding the Storm: The Untold Story of Africa’s Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic
