Jennifer Hudson delivered an emotional musical tribute to music executive Clive Davis at his funeral in New York on Monday, performing “Hallelujah” and “I Will Always Love You” before mourners gathered to honour the late industry figure, per consequence.net.
Accompanied by piano, strings and backing vocalists, Hudson opened with a soulful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” before transitioning into Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” the song popularised by Whitney Houston.
Hudson’s connection to Davis began early in her career, when he signed her to J Records following her breakthrough on American Idol and oversaw the launch of her self-titled debut album. She remained a regular presence at his industry events, including his annual pre-Grammys gala and frequently described him as a mentor.
Davis died on June 22. Following his death, Hudson wrote on Instagram that the news had been “a huge blow to wake up to,” adding that he was “family to me” despite his stature as a music mogul, and that his legacy would “always live on.”
Footage of Hudson’s funeral performance was shared on social media on June 29.
