‘Sorry, Baby’ set to open Edinburgh International Film Festival

The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) has announced its opening film for the 78th edition, taking place from August 14-20, according to a standard.co.uk report. Sorry, Baby, a comedy-drama film written and directed by Eva Victor, will have its UK premiere at the festival. This debut film has already gained recognition at the Sundance Film Festival, where Victor won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.

The film tells the story of Agnes, a young literature professor recovering from a traumatic experience. With a nonlinear narrative, the movie blends humour with deep emotional moments, showcasing Victor’s talent as a writer, director and actress. Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges star alongside Victor in this highly praised film.

Paul Ridd, EIFF’s chief executive and director, expressed his admiration for the film, citing its “witty and moving script” and “heart-breaking performances.” He added that the film’s independent spirit aligns perfectly with EIFF’s values.

Sorry, Baby will also be screened at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Directors’ Fortnight section and will be released in the US by A24 on June 27, 2025, and later in the UK by Picturehouse Entertainment. Sara Frain, director of distribution and marketing at Picturehouse, praised the film, saying it marks the emergence of a remarkable talent.
