Marvel’s latest offering, Deadpool & Wolverine, is generating unprecedented buzz as early reactions from critics flood social media, per shortlist.com. The film, which marks Disney’s sole Marvel release for 2024, appears to have successfully revitalised the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following a series of disappointments in 2023.
Critics who attended early screenings are lauding the movie for its humour, heart, and the electric chemistry between stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The R-rated superhero team-up is being hailed as a potential game-changer for the franchise, with many reviewers placing it among Marvel’s best productions to date.
Jake Hamilton, a respected film critic, praised the release, stating it’s “Top 10 Marvel — not because of its cameos, because of its heart.” This sentiment was echoed by Dempsey Pillot of Cinefied, who called it “top-tier Marvel” and “a road trip comedy for the ages.”
The film’s approach to the Marvel multiverse has garnered particular attention. Ross Bonaime of Collider described it as “a true love letter to the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel and such a weird, bloody, surprising delight.” This expansion of the MCU’s scope seems to have struck a chord with viewers and critics alike.
Executive producer Wendy Jacobson revealed that the studio employed misdirection tactics to keep the film’s surprises under wraps. “There may or may not have been some subterfuge and misdirections on the internet or in-person in order to protect the secrecy,” she stated, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the release.

The overwhelmingly positive reception comes as a relief to Marvel Studios, following the lukewarm responses to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels in 2023. It appears that the studio’s gamble on an R-rated, irreverent superhero film has paid off handsomely.
