Writers 2000 will be holding its annual writing competition this May and it could not have come at a better time.
Although the country is still in Level 4 of lockdown and some people have gone back to work, many other community members are still at home looking for ideas to pass time.
Public relations officer of W2000 Thomas Mann invited members and non-members with writing interests to consider entering the 2020 competition.
“First-prize winners in each category will win an online writing course from All About Writing.”.
All winning entries will be featured in the W2000 magazine, The Write Stuff..
W2000 is a group for anyone who has a love or interest in writing.
Thomas explained this year’s topics, themes, word and line count instructions.
“The first category is fiction where writers pen down a 1 500 to 2 500 words horror story. They should write an original fictional horror story.
“Non-fiction is the second category where writers are encouraged to write a true article or story about an artefact, under the theme ‘An Interesting Place’ in 800 to 1 200 words. This could be an item passed down in their family or something of historical significance. A good description will be important,” said Thomas.
Both fiction and non-fiction topics will be judged by writer and editor, Anna Stroud.
The poetry category gives freedom of theme and length.
“The poem can also be in any format the poet chooses,” said the W2000 PR officer.
The second poem entry is a Haiku nature poem.
“Haiku poems must be written in the traditional format.?Each haiku entry must be submitted separately,” said Thomas.
All poems will be judged by publisher, poet, author and coach Anthea Pretorius.
‘Life’s Like That’ is the last topic with any theme the writer chooses.
Thomas said the writing should be 500 words with a humorous look at real life.
Journalist, author, media consultant and coach Marion Scher will be the judge.
Closing date for the competition is May 30.
