Uffizi rehangs Botticelli ‘Venus’ & ‘Primavera’ in new galleries

The Uffizi Gallery in Florence has reinstalled Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and La Primavera, placing the masterpieces opposite each other in separate, linked rooms to ease congestion and provide greater historical context, per galeriemagazine.com.

The opening, announced June 17, is part of a wider reorganisation of the museum’s Renaissance collection.

Previously, both paintings hung in the same room, leading to heavy crowding that hindered visitors’ ability to view the works and other pieces on display. The new permanent Botticelli galleries now surround the two works with additional paintings by the artist, offering what the museum calls a “richer context” and more space for viewing.

Uffizi director Simone Verde said the June 17 opening marks “another important milestone” in the comprehensive reinstallation announced in 2024. The project has already seen the reopening of several renovated spaces, including the Cabinet of Ancient Marbles, the Niobe Room, and the Cabinet of Mathematics.

Verde described the undertaking as a “philological, aesthetic, and art-historical” effort to reunite the Medici collections. The goal, he said, is for the Galleries to “renew themselves without betraying their identity” and continue as “the most beautiful museum in the world.”

Florence and the Uffizi have long been associated with Stendhal Syndrome, a term for physical reactions such as dizziness or fainting reportedly triggered by exposure to significant art. The condition is not recognised in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and symptoms are also attributed to heat, crowds and exhaustion.

The museum did not confirm whether the new layout would reduce such incidents, but described the change as a welcome adjustment for visitor flow. Further re-installations across the Galleries are expected as the 2024 project continues.
