Tove Lo drops video for new track “Borderline”

Tove Lo, Swedish pop maverick, has dropped her first new music of 2023 titled “Borderline”, and has released the video for the single, which was co-written with Dua Lipa.

The track, according to Rolling Stone, is the first new music from the Swedish pop innovator since last year’s critically-acclaimed fifth album Dirt Femme.

The video is directed by Brazilian artist Nogari, and was shot in Mexico City. It is intended as a sequel to last year’s clip for ‘No One Dies from Love’.

Discussing the track, Lo said: “‘Borderline’ is a song about being on the edge of love. The drama you cause inside yourself and with another person if you feel insecure. You test them. This song has existed for a long time and I’ve always felt it was incredibly special so getting to release it now has sort of a full circle feeling. Maybe that’s why it was the perfect song for Annie’s revenge video. I hope my fans love the bizarre love story that unfolds in this video, it’s my favourite kind of thing!”

The single arrives after last year’s 16-date tour of Europe.

She is back on the road in North America at present, with a summer of European festivals to follow as she continues to promote Dirt Femme. She spoke to Rolling Stone UK about the album last Autumn, saying that “there are songs to give you comfort, to make you dance and feel sexy, to make you cry. You can go through your life with this album.”

Lo and Lipa, now co-writers, toured the UK together last year. The latter became an Albanian citizen last November, and is expected to focus on a transition into the acting world this year; she will appear in Matthew Vaughn’s star-studded spy thriller Argylle. As long ago as last March, Lipa’s third album was, in her own words, “50 per cent done”, with her telling Elton John on an episode of her ‘Service95’ podcast that “it’s starting to feel good. It’s starting to take shape. I’m very excited about some of the new songs so it’s always exciting to look forward towards something.”
