American character actor James Handy, who appeared in Top Gun: Maverick and Jumanji, has been stabbed to death at a property in Los Angeles aged 81, per nypost.com.

Police have arrested 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, on suspicion of murder following a chilling emergency call to emergency services.

Los Angeles Police Department officers were dispatched to a property on the 19200 block of Erwin Street in the Tarzana neighbourhood on the morning of June 3. The response followed a 911 emergency call in which the caller reportedly stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

Upon arrival, emergency services discovered Handy unconscious in the front yard of the residence. The veteran actor had sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Shortly after the incident, Gledhill flagged down police officers in the area and identified himself as the suspect. Authorities confirmed that Gledhill had been living at the residence with his mother at the time of the fatal confrontation. He is currently being held on a $2 million bail.

Investigators have stated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Handy enjoyed a prolific Hollywood career spanning five decades, securing nearly 150 acting credits. Beyond his roles as a bartender in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and an exterminator in the 1995 film Jumanji, he was a fixture on American television, appearing in acclaimed series such as The X-Files, The West Wing, and ER.
