Tony Awards 2026: Liberation and Schmigadoon triumph at 79th annual ceremony

The 79th annual Tony Awards took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 7, celebrating the finest achievements in Broadway theatre.

Hosted by the American singer P!NK, the ceremony saw Liberation named Best Play, whilst Schmigadoon! secured the award for Best Musical.

The prestigious event distributed honours across numerous categories spanning performance, direction and technical production. Ragtime won Best Musical Revival, with its lead performers Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy claiming the awards for Best Leading Actor and Actress in a Musical. Schmigadoon! added to its success with wins for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.

In the play categories, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman won Best Play Revival. The production dominated the creative categories, earning Joe Mantello the award for Best Direction of a Play, Laurie Metcalf for Best Featured Actress in a Play, and securing additional wins for its scenic, lighting, and sound design.

John Lithgow was named Best Leading Actor in a Play for his performance in Giant, whilst Lesley Manville won Best Leading Actress in a Play for Oedipus. Other notable acting honours went to Alden Ehrenreich for Becky Shaw, and Ali Louis Bourzgui and Shoshana Bean, who both won featured musical acting awards for *The Lost Boys*.

The Tony Awards remain the highest honour in American theatre, serving as a critical benchmark for commercial and artistic success on Broadway. This year’s ceremony reflected a diverse theatrical landscape, balancing contemporary new works with heavily praised revivals of classic American literature.
