#RoundAboutTown With Henri Yire

The weekend started early for me.

Teffest2019 really outdid itself. It had everybody who was anybody in the Nollywood industry show up.

The veteran session was resplendent with wrinkled faces and wise words while the silent disco party, complete with wine and a trio of music-spewing DJs was the highlight of the day.

We are at the verge of closing the year and as is typical to Lagos, we will be awash with so much end-of-the-year events, that we will be spoilt for choice.

My job as a ‘certified event connoisseur’ (side eye) will be to seperate the wannabes from the must attend events, so you’ll know what’s popping and what’s not.

Yeah, I’m that generous.

So if your plan was to bask in your hermitage this weekend, you chose the wrong weekend.

Here are some of the events you should be checking out this weekend.

CONVERSATIONS @ INDIGO

Life is finite. Yet it seems we do not like to discuss death and sometimes it is seen as a taboo subject. Why is this so? In Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman, the title alone is provocative and then the themes on death, culture, and suicide are presented. Dutch Vanitas Art by Harmen Steenwyk (Allegory of the Vanities of Life) looks at mortality as part of existence, a reminder that all is vanity, music, knowledge, wealth. This does not mean the elements are not worth pursuing, but rather a reminder of the mortal to guide how we live. In Mexico, the day of the dead is celebrated – 2 Nov 2019. What does death mean to you? How have you felt about your own mortality? What customs/rites do you like about death? What don’t you like? Join us on Sat 30th for an interesting session on this unique topic.

GUITARS FROM NIGERIA TO THE WORLD

The Goethe-Institut Nigeria and Jazzhole invites you to a concert with German, Nigerian, Spanish and Mexican classic guitarists. The well-known German, Romanian-born guitarist Mircea Gogoncea will play together with his colleagues Eduardo Inestal (Spain), Arturo Castro Nogueras (Mexico) and the Nigerian guitar group African Classical Guitar Platoon led by Nigerian guitarist Taiwo Adegoke a fascinating selection of international music for classic guitar. This concert is part of Mircea Gogoncea’s voluntary project on supporting Nigerian classic guitarists. Two years ago, together with the support of the Robert Schumann University Duesseldorf and the renowned Spanish luthier family Ramirez, he managed to bring the probably first classic guitar to Nigeria. In spring 2018, he came for the first time to Lagos to give a master class for young guitarist at the Goethe-Institut Nigeria. QuramoWritersPrize Entry- Twenty Sixty-One’ by Ikem Cynthia Chinenyenwa

Twenty Sixty-One’ by Ikem Cynthia Chinenyenwa makes the shortlist of 15 for this year’s #QuramoWritersPrize

‘Twenty Sixty-One’ by Ikem Cynthia Chinenyenwa makes the shortlist of 15 for this year’s #QuramoWritersPrize

He shook his head again and wound the windscreens down. He heard footsteps and sat up in his seat. It was a police officer on patrol. He was speaking into his walkie-talkie. He walked past Tony to his patrol car and started a conversation with his partner who was seated in the car. Tony thought the officer’s presence would ruin his plans to confront Pedro upon his return. But he was relieved when they turned the siren on and sped off. He exhaled and put his head on the headrest. He looked out through his window towards the sky. The moon shone across trees and its lights reflected all over the parking lot. A rush of air caressed his face and he wiped it with his free palm. He watched another car drive out the parking lot.

Then he heard footsteps approach, and the car door opened. He stole a glance at Pedro as he dropped into his seat and turned to put the grocery bag on the backseat.

He turned the ignition and sped off.

Everything worked out as he had imagined and planned. He put his shotgun to Pedro’s temple and pulled the trigger thirty minutes from the parking lot, very close to the city’s suburb. He confessed to selling out the deal because he needed the extra five thousand dollars Omar’s girl’s gang leader offered him.

Announcement of the winner for this year’s #QuramoWritersPrize will be made on Sunday, December 15 , 2019 at Qfest 2019.
